Men's Soccer Tabbed No. 23 In CollegeSoccerNews Preseason Poll

Aug. 13, 2003

SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team, which makes its season debut at home with a pair of exhibition matches Aug. 20 and Aug. 23, has been tabbed No. 23 in a preseason poll conducted by The Huskies also received a ranking of No. 28 in the website's ranking of the Top-40 recruiting classes in the nation.

Washington was one of four Pac-10 schools included in the preseason team poll, led by second-ranked and defending NCAA champion UCLA. NCAA runner-up Stanford is ranked fifth, while Cal checks in at No. 18. Maryland was the No. 1 pick, while St. John's (third) and Wake Forest (fourth) rounded out the top-five. Pac-10 opponent Oregon State received votes in the poll.

The Huskies 2003 recruiting class made up of Northwest standouts Derek Crismier (Redmond, Wash.), Matt Fischer (Sammamish, Wash.), Will Flanagan (Ridgefield, Wash.), Ty Harden (Junction City, Ore.) and Kevin Forrest (Edmonds, Wash.) was tabbed 28th in a Top-40 poll. Four of the five are defensive players, while Crismier is a midfielder. UCLA's recruiting class received top billing, followed by St. Louis, Notre Dame, SMU and North Carolina to round out the Top-Five.

The Huskies return 13 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad that went 6-10-3 overall, and finished fifth in conference play with a 3-7 Pac-10 record. The 2002 season was quite uncharacteristic of previous Husky tradition, as it was UW's first non-winning season since 1991 and the first losing season since 1968. Led by 12-year head coach Dean Wurzberger, Washington will be eager to take the field this fall. The 2003 squad features returning All-Pac-10 selections C.J. Klaas (first-team), Seth Marsh (honorable mention) and Brett Wiesner (second-team).

Washington will entertain Seattle University, Wed., Aug. 20, for a 7 p.m. exhibition match at Husky Soccer Field, prior to a second exhibition with Seattle Pacific, Sat., Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. For tickets, please contact the Husky Ticket Office at 206-543-2200. Tickets can also be purchased online at
