Veterans Top Newcomers In Annual Intrasquad Match

Aug. 13, 2003

Chad Bartlome's goal and assist led the veteran White squad to a 3-0 victory over the Black on Wednesday afternoon in the Oregon State men's soccer team's annual Black vs. White intrasquad scrimmage at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.

The white squad consisted of returning players, and newcomers made up the Black team.

Sophomore Matt Johnson opened the scoring for the White with an unassisted shot to the far post from the right side of the box at the 6:47 mark.

With 32 seconds left in the first of two 30-minute halves, Bartlome won a battle for a loose ball in the middle of the box and sent a shot past freshman Jason Mariner for a 2-0 advantage.

Mariner made seven saves in the first half, and broke up other scoring opportunities as well before being replaced by Matthew Fitchett at halftime.

Bartlome set up the game's final score by Ross Duncan with a through-ball from the top of the box. Duncan drove it home from the left side with under four minutes remaining for the final 3-0 count.

The veterans outshot the newcomers 19-4, with all four of the Black's shots coming in the second half. In all, the Black's goalkeepers posted 10 saves on the day - seven by Mariner and three by Fitchett. OSU saves recordholder Peter Billmeyer was forced to make just two stops.

The Beavers open regular season play Aug. 29 at San Diego State. OSU's first home match comes against Gonzaga on Sept. 12 when it hosts the Diadora Classic; the Beavers take on St. Mary's in the second half of the tournament Sunday, Sept. 14.
