Aug. 14, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University volleyball team will hold two intrasquad scrimmages with the first taking place this Friday, Aug. 15, Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick announced today.
In addition to the Aug. 15 scrimmage, WSU will play again Thursday, Aug. 21. All the action will take place on the Cougars' home court at Bohler Gym and will begin at 6:30 p.m., lasting until 8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend with no admission being charged.
'Cougar volleyball has such a strong fan base and we know they are anxious to get to know our ten newcomers on this year's team prior to the Cougar Challenge tournament,' Fredrick said. 'The coaching staff is very excited about this team and the intrasquad scrimmages will be very competitive and a lot of fun to watch.'
WSU is ranked 19th in the USA TODAY/American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Preseason Poll, released Monday. The Cougar volleyball team finished the 2002 season with a 24-8 record and ranked seventh nationally. The Cougars graduated five starters off the 2002 squad and were selected to finish eighth in the Pac-10 Conference 2003 standings by a vote of the coaches.
Fredrick, beginning her 15th year with the program, will also showcase the Cougars in an intrasquad scrimmage on an outdoor court at the Cougar Plaza parking lot, Friday, Aug. 22, at 5:30 p.m., as part of the Pullman Lentil Festival. The WSU team opens the season with the 15th Annual Cougar Challenge Tournament, Aug. 29-30, at Bohler Gym.
