Cougars Show Progress In Second Scrimmage
Aug. 16, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State held its second fall camp scrimmage Saturday morning at Martin Stadium. Both the offense and defense were able to take plenty of positives out of the hard-hitting session.
Senior running back Jonathan Smith turned in one of the day's top performances, carrying the ball seven times for 65 yards and two touchdowns. On one of his two scoring runs, Smith was brought down but landed on top of the defender, allowing him to pop back up and dash 23 yards for a touchdown.
Senior quarterback Matt Kegel had his second solid outing of the week, hitting 10 of 16 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. At least three of his incompletions were on target, but juggled and dropped by the intended receiver. Kegel, who is now 24 of 30 for 284 yards and three touchdowns through two scrimmages, connected with speedster Sammy Moore on a 44-yard scoring play after rolling away from pressure.
Freshman signal caller Alex Brink continued to impress. The Eugene, Ore., native connected on 8 of 15 attempts for 110 yards and a 22-yard touchdown strike in the corner of the endzone to receiver Brett Johnson.
Redshirt freshman Chris Jordan led all receivers with four catches and 68 yards.
The defense was sparked by two spectacular interceptions. On the morning's first drive, cornerback Karl Paymah stepped in front of a Josh Swogger pass and extended for a highlight-quality interception.
Sophomore defensive end Adam Braidwood was the thief the second time around, showing good awareness by hauling in a ball that was batted 15 feet in the air and picking up five yards after the catch.
