Corvallis, Ore. - Mike Riley Quotes

The following are comments from head coach Mike Riley after Saturday's two-hour scrimmage at Prothro Field.

Q. Your overall thoughts about today's scrimmage.

A. 'I thought it was pretty good. I was disappointed in a couple of things, but every time we step on the field I will be disappointed in something. As far as playing football, there was some give-and-take - the offense made some plays and the defense made some plays. I was pleased that everybody got to play. As far as the efficiency of the scrimmage, I thought it was pretty good. We had some penalties that we need to eliminate, but in reality I'm glad they came up - we can learn from those type of mistakes.'

Q. It appeared that the scrimmage was game speed today, would that be an accurate statement?

A. 'Everything was live, except at the quarterback position. It was a real good day for us, and it was an extended day. The whole day was full-speed and we had a lot of tackling. Our young guys got to play, and some of them showed off. I think people noticed Yvenson Bernard.'

Q. What about Yvenson's play today?

A. 'When a guy plays as good as he did today, everybody sees his ability. His teammates really appreciate his toughness - they were all hootin' and hollerin' about Yvenson's play. This wasn't an eye opener for us today; he has been impressive in practices. We have discussed the redshirt issue among the coaching staff, we are trying to determine if we can find a place to play him this season.'

Q. Ryan Gunderson appears to be making strides. Describe what you have seen from him.

A. 'Ryan has a lot of ability, but he also has some of those quarterback intangibles. I also thought Danny Southwick played well today. We dropped some balls, otherwise their stats would look better.'

Q. What are your plans for Tuesday's scrimmage?

A. 'I don't have a definite plan for Tuesday. I know it won't be nearly as extensive as today's, and I'm actually thinking about not scrimmaging full at all. We have practiced physical all fall camp, so I may look at Tuesday as more of game management scrimmage. I don't think we need much more of what we did today, we are getting real close to game week. We will have officials here Tuesday, but I'm not real sure just how extensive the day will be.'
