After Three Matches In Costa Rica, OSU Undefeated

Aug. 19, 2003

Roughly midway through its 12-day tour of Costa Rica, the Oregon State women's soccer squad is undefeated after three matches.

The Beavers have two contests remaining, both against the Costa Rica National Team on Aug. 21 and 23 before returning home Aug. 24.

In its most recent action on Monday, the Beavers topped the professional Costa Rican First Division champions Desamparados 3-0 on the strength of two scores from junior Janelle Joy and another by sophomore Stacey Mescher.

Three days earlier, OSU beat the same Desamparados squad 4-1. Jillian Nicks, Lindsey Beem, Joy and Tessa Baker all scored.

On Aug. 14, a day after their arrival, the Beavers earned a 4-3 win over the professional team Goicochea, as Joy, Brianna Monka, Mescher and Nicks all netted shots after falling behind 1-0 in the first 30 seconds.

Joy leads the team with four goals in three games. Mescher has three assists, including two in the first match.

When not on the pitch competing or practicing, the Beavers have seen world-famous sights such as the Arenal Volcano, Tabacon Hot Springs and Playa Tambor.

'Things are going well overall,' head coach Steve Fennah said. 'The team is coming together nicely. We've seen some amazing scenery, as well.'

The Beavers first regular season game is Aug. 29 at San Diego State.
