Freshman Tailback Randy Hill Runs Wild In ASU's First Scrimmage

PAYSON, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- The No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devil Football team held its first full-contact scrimmage of the year Tuesday morning at Rumsey Park in Payson.
Tailback Randy Hill had the most impressive performance rushing for 103 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown. The redshirt freshman out of Tempe's McClintock High School worked with the second string offense and had several impressive runs, including scampers of 22 and 30 yards. He finished off an impressive 80-yard drive with a one-yard run for his only rushing TD of the scrimmage.
Junior quarterback Andrew Walter (Grand Junction, Colo.) was 9-for-19 for 85 yards. Freshman quarterback Sam Keller (Danville, Calif.) looked impressive while working with the second string, going 6-for-10 for 128 yards and two touchdown passes. Keller hooked up with redshirt freshman wide receiver Terry Richardson (Corona, Calif.) on a 30-yard TD and sophomore receiver Moey Mutz (Livermore, Calif.) on a 53-yard TD.
Richardson led all receivers with three catches for 65 yards, while Mutz had two catches for 61 yards. Senior Skyler Fulton (Olympia, Wash.) continued his solid camp with two catches for 27 yards and junior Daryl Lightfoot (Phoenix, Ariz.) had two catches for 33 yards.
Redshirt sophomore Hakim Hill (Iowa City, Iowa) looked impressive while averaging nine yards a carry for 36 total yards on four carries. Senior Mike Williams (Lakewood, Calif.) worked with the first team and had 16 yards on three carries.
The defense looked equally impressive shutting down the offense with several three-and-outs. Junior defensive end Ishmael Thrower (Sacramento, Calif.) recovered a fumble and senior Matt Mason intercepted a batted down ball and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown.
The special teams unit also got its first extensive workout of the preseason with several drills. Senior punter and Ray Guy Award candidate Tim Parker (Chula Vista, Calif.) averaged 45.9 yards on 10 punts, while walk-on Chris MacDonald (Mesa, Ariz.) averaged 44.5 yards on his 11 punts in simulated drills.
The field goal unit was led by freshman Jessie Ainsworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) as he went 3-for-4, connecting on kicks of 35, 42 and 51 yards. Parker was 3-for-5 with a long of 44 yards and redshirt freshman Kyle Dixon (Irvine, Calif.) was 1-for-2 connecting on a 45-yarder.
The scrimmage was held on the FieldTurf of Rumsey Park due to heavy rains on Monday at Camp Tontozona. ASU is scheduled to hold the rest of their practices at Camp Tontozona, but inclement weather could move practices to Payson. The annual Camp Tontozona scrimmage will be held this Saturday at 9 a.m.
