Aug. 25, 2003

Oklahoma City, Okla. - Catcher Courtney Scott and third baseman Vicky Galindo were among the 46 players invited to participate in the 2003 Olympic Trials by USA Softball.

The trials will be held Sept. 2-7, at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Cula Vista, Calif. The competition will be for 18 spots on the USA Olympic Roster for the 2004 games in Athens. The final list of players on the team will be announced on Monday, Sept. 8, with three of the 18 being designated as alternates at a later date.

Scott, a second team All-American as a senior last year, was fourth on the team in hitting with a .295 batting average. The Clovis, Calif., native knocked in 42 runs, which led the team, and hit seven home runs, second to Veronica Nelson. Galindo, who will be a junior this year, was second on the team in batting with a .324 average, and led the team in runs scored with 39. The Union City, Calif., product quickly claimed the third base job in her first year at Cal in 2002 and swiped a team high 19 bases in 23 attempts

Scott and Galindo are two of only 13 athletes invited to the competition without USA Softball experience. 33 of the players selected had competed on either the 2003 USA Softball National Team or the 2003 USA Softball Elite National Team.

The Bears have a tradition of sending people with Cal ties to the Olympics since softball became an official sport in 1996. At the 1996 games in Atlanta, Cal sent catcher Gillian Boxx and pitcher Michele Granger for a United States team that won the gold medal, and pitcher Lisa Martinez as a representative of Puerto Rico. During the 2000 games in Sydney, Nicole DiSalvio represented Cal on the Italian national team. Current Cal head coach Diane Ninemire will be at the 2004 games as an assistant coach to the Greek softball team.

The U.S. women have never failed to claim gold in the Olympic Games since softball was made an official sport in 1996. They will carry a 15-4 record into the 2004 games in Athens.
