Women's Track And Field Update
Aug. 26, 2003
UCLA women's track & field legend Gail Devers on Tuesday will compete in the 100m hurdle semifinals at the 2003 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Paris.
On Monday in the women's 100m hurdle quarterfinals, Devers, the three-time World Champion in this event and the defending U. S. champion, won heat five in a time of 12.76. The U. S. advanced two other runners - Jenny Adams won heat three (12.74) and Miesha McKelvy took heat one (12.94). Devers, who has run the second-fastest time in the World this season (12.49), is favored to win this event. Earlier in this meet, she placed eighth in the women's 100m final (11.11, season-best).
Also on Monday, Bruin great Suzy Powell, the school record-holder (214-0, 1997), placed ninth (196-5) in the women's discus final. She was the only U. S. athlete in the final and it was her first World Championship finals competition, having competed in qualifying in 1997, 1999 and 2001.
'I was hoping to throw better tonight,' Powell said. 'Everything was great. The crowd was terrific. I could go into a lot of technical explanations on why I didn't throw better, but I don't want to bore you with that.'
Joanna Hayes, who placed second in the women's 400m hurdles at the 2003 USA meet, on Monday in the semifinal rounds, placed fifth in her heat (55.35) and did not advance to the final. Hayes, who is recovering from the flu and bronchitis, during her Bruin career won the women's 400m hurdles at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor.
'My pattern was off about the sixth hurdle,' Hayes said, 'so I knew I wasn't where I was supposed to be. I got really sick but I don't want to blame it on that. I stepped on the line so I should be ready. My body is still fighting the flu and bronchitis. I'm not happy, but I'm not completely disappointed. Now I'll get ready for next year.'
The 2003 World T & F Championships in Paris will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 31. For complete and daily results, please refer to www.usatf.org.
