TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior Ashley Casas scored at 47:47 for the game-winner Friday and the No. 21 USC Trojans defeated the No. 13 Florida State Seminoles, 2-1, at Seminole Soccer Complex. It was the season opener for both teams.
It was the first season opening loss for Florida State since 1999 and its first loss for a Friday night home game in five years.
After a USC shot in the box, Casas collected the rebound and knocked a shot off FSU goalie Joy McKenzie that deflected into the net from 20 yards out. Junior goalie Julie Peterson made five saves for the Trojans, playing with an aggressive style all night.
USC freshman Jocelyn Hein opened the scoring at 41:39, converting on a Trojan corner kick on the left side of the goal. The Seminoles answered less than a minute later when Jez Ratliff scored off a rebound in the penalty box to tie the game before halftime.
Both teams had several opportunities in the first half with the Women of Troy holding a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks.
USC will play on Sunday (Aug. 31) at Florida, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern.
