No. 17 Cal Drops Opener to No. 7 Indiana, 3-0

Aug. 29, 2003

Bloomington, IN - Cal lost its opening game of the 2003 season to Indiana at the adidas Indiana Tournament today, 3-0. The game was delayed for an hour because of severe lighting in the area.

The Bears quickly fell behind in the second minute, when senior midfielder Vijay Dias netted the first goal official goal of the year for the Hoosiers, assisted by junior forward Ned Grabavoy. Indiana never looked back.

Grabavoy added a goal of his own in the 31st minute. He broke free from the Cal defense and unleashed a hooking right to left shot that found the net from ten yards out. Grabavoy recently returned from a professional tryout with the French First Division club Monaco, electing to stay at Indiana for another year.

The Hoosiers added their final goal in 36th minute on a shot by sophomore midfielder Brian Plotkin that sailed into the left corner.

The scoring was over at that point but the drama continued for Cal. Right before halftime, in the 43rd minute, senior Matt Lawler was sent off with a red card from the referee. Cal was forced to play the remainder of the game one man short.

Cal did manage nine shots on goal during the game but were unable to break through. Junior midfielder Mike Munoz and junior defender Yohei Fukuda led the Bears with two shots on goal apiece.

Cal now looks ahead to Notre Dame on Saturday. The Fighting Irish played to a draw in the opening match of the adidas Indiana Tournament against UAB, 0-0.
