SAN DIEGO, Calif. - -
The Oregon State men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision in its non-league season-opener at San Diego State (1-0-0) on Friday afternoon, surrendering the tying goal with six seconds remaining in regulation.
After OSU controlled the tempo for several minutes, SDSU's Kenny Fechner lobbed a ball into OSU's box. The ball took an awkward bounce over OSU keeper Peter Billmeyer's hands, and the Aztecs' Ryan Curtis sent home the equalizer at 89:54.
Colin Jennings scored the game-winner in the third minute of overtime with a shot from the left side into the right corner. Fechner tallied his second assist of the day on the play.
'A lot of our players did not play up to their ability today,' fifth-year OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'At the same time, we were still in the game and up 1-0 with six seconds to play. We let it get away. We just have to grind it out Sunday.'
Last year's Pac-10 scoring leader, Alan Gordon, was held to one shot for OSU. Billmeyer, the two-time Pac-10 saves leader, made five stops Friday.
OSU is now 3-2-0 in season-openers, and fell to 2-1-0 in the all-time series with the Aztecs.
The Beavers stay in San Diego for a 2:15 p.m. match on Sunday against the University of San Diego.
