UW Upsets #18 Maryland in Tournament Opener
Aug. 29, 2003
SEATTLE - Junior Tina Frimpong scored twice, including a golden goal in the 16th minute of overtime Friday as the Washington women upset 18th-ranked Maryland 2-1 during the first round of the Arena Sports Pac-10/ACC Challenge at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies outshot Maryland 13-3 in the first half, but only managed a 1-1 tie. Frimpong opened the scoring at 28:55 on a 15-yard shot into an open net after dribbling past UM goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill. The Terrapins netted the equalizer at 36:38 on a goal by Simon Dekker set up by a long throw-in from Lindsay Givens.
Frimpong ended a span of 74 scoreless minutes, recording the game-winner from 12 yards out during a scramble in front of the goal. Sophomore Kim Taylor was credited with assists on both of Frimpong's goals.
In the opening game of the tournament, sophomore Lindsay Tarpley notched a hat trick that lifted top-ranked North Carolina to a 4-0 win over Washington State.
Alyssa Ramsey scored 28 seconds in the game and Tarpley followed with three more goals for UNC. The 2002 national Freshman of the Year, Tarpley rejoined the Tar Heels this week after training with the U.S. National Team. She was not selected to the World Cup roster, but senior teammate Catherine Reddick was and did not travel to Seattle.
Tarpley scored twice in the first half, at 11:09 and 28:47 and capped the scoring at 67:40.
Carolina outshot the Cougars by a 22-11 count. UNC goalkeeper Aly Winget registered six saves and WSU's Sara Leibowitz stopped four shots.
The teams exchange opponents Sunday with WSU and Maryland meeting at 11 a.m. and the Huskies hosting top-ranked UNC at 1:30 p.m. Washington lost all three previous meetings with the Tar Heels and has an 0-3 all-time record against opponents ranked No. 1.
