Volleyball Drops Season Opener To Notre Dame

TUCSON, Ariz.- The No.10-ranked Arizona volleyball team dropped its season opening match 3-1 to defending Big East champion Notre Dame at the Four Points Sheraton Pepperdine Classic in Malibu, Calif., on Friday. Games scores were 30-18, 28-30, 30-20, 30-26. The loss was Arizona's first season-opening defeat since 2000.
The Fighting Irish limited the Arizona offense to a lowly .100 hitting percentage in the match while hitting at a .324 clip. Arizona committed 34 hitting errors in the match to Notre Dame's 17.
Individually, sophomores Kim Glass and Bre Ladd led the way on offense for Arizona. Glass led all players in the match with 19 kills, while Ladd chipped in with another 13. Despite leading the way in kills, the two also contributed to Arizona struggles on offense as they combined for 19 hitting errors in the match.
Freshman setter Stephanie Butkus dished out a match-high 36 assists in her Wildcat debut.
Notre Dame's Lauren Kelbley paced the victorious Irish with 16 kills on the night. Teammate Emily Loomis contributed 14 more kills on a match-high .525 hitting.
Arizona will look to bounce back from the defeat on Saturday in a pair of matches against Eastern Washington and host school Pepperdine. First serve for the match against Eastern Washington is set for noon and with No. 5-ranked Pepperdine at 7 p.m.
