Women's Soccer Tops San Diego State 1-0 In Season Opener
Aug. 29, 2003
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - -
Brianna Monka's second-half goal lifted the Oregon State women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference season-opening win over San Diego State on Friday evening.
Monka, a sophomore midfielder who was second on the team in scoring as a freshman, took a pass from fellow sophomore Stacey Mescher at the edge of the box and beat SDSU (0-1-0) keeper Stephanie Pearson for the score in the 62nd minute.
'That was an excellent finish by Monka, and an outstanding goal overall,' sixth-year head coach Steve Fennah said.
Neither team mustered much offense, as the Beavers (1-0-0) outshot SDSU 10-8.
'The game was scrappy - both teams were struggling to play on a difficult surface, but I thought our kids did a very good job,' Fennah said. 'They made some adjustments and played more directly; they did exactly what they needed to do to win today. It's important that we started the season with this win.'
Freshman Melissa Onstad made her first career start in goal, earning the shutout with 90 minutes of work; she made four saves.
OSU takes on the University of San Diego on Sunday at 11:45 a.m. The Beavers' home opener comes next Friday, Sept. 5 against San Francisco at 5 p.m.
