Husky Men Explode For 5-1 Win Over UNLV In Soccer Season Opener
Aug. 30, 2003
PORTLAND, Ore. - Led by a pair of goals from sophomore newcomer Leo Totev, Washington men's soccer exploded for five goals in a 5-1 drumming of UNLV in the first round of the Nike Invitational hosted by the University of Portland at Merlo Field, Saturday. The match was the 2003 season opener for both teams.
The Huskies found themselves down 1-0 in just the third minute of the game, only to bounce back with five unanswered goals to cruise to the victory. Washington opens the season 1-0, while UNLV falls to 0-1. UW will face Oakland University in the tournament's second round Mon., Sept. 1, at noon, while the Rebels will face host Portland at 2:15 p.m.
Totev wasn't the only Husky to have a big day, as senior Sean Giudice added a goal and an assist, while junior C.J. Klaas added two assists. Like Totev, true freshman Kevin Forrest also got into the scoring act with a goal in his Washington debut. The last time the Huskies as many as five goals was 2000, when they racked up a 7-0 shutout over Cal on Oct. 8.
Alex Hernandez put the Rebels on the board early, with a 10-yard bullet past UW senior goalkeeper Danny Waltman in the third minute. It was Totev who sparked the Huskies, scoring the equalizer from 10 yards out in the 32nd minute, before nailing the eventual game-winner just over a minute later. The first of Klaas' two assists came on Totev's second goal.
Hanging onto a 2-1 lead after halftime, the Huskies struck three more times within a four-minute time span in the second frame. Forrest, assisted by Giudice, blasted a rocket from 15 yards out to the far post to give Washington a 3-1 cushion in the 57th minute. Senior Troy Ready followed suit, winning a one-on-one battle with UNLV goalkeeper Matt Johnson to net the Huskies' fourth goal in the 59th minute. Giudice's 10-yard blast, assisted by sophomore Jeff Hoover, wrapped UW's offensive barrage in the 61st minute of play.
Totev and Giudice led the Husky attack with four shots each as Washington outshot the Rebels 17-8. Waltman grabbed two saves in goal, while second-half sub Chris Eylander made three saves. Four different UNLV players tallied two shots apiece, while Johnson made a total of seven saves.
