USF Wins Cougar Challenge Volleyball Tourney

PULLMAN, Wash. - The University of San Francisco Dons won the 14th Annual Les Schwab Cougar Challenge Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 record.
Wichita State finished second with (2-1), host team Washington State (1-2) was third and Oklahoma (0-3) fourth.
USF sealed the tourney crown for first-year head coach Jeff Nelson with a 3-2 win over WSU in the afternoon match. The Dons defeated Oklahoma in the evening session in three straight games.
Theresa Hart led the Dons with 15 kills and 12 digs in the win over Oklahoma. Brittanie Budinge, tournament MVP, tallied 11 kills and recorded her 1,010th career kill. Teresa Russell has five blocks.
Oklahoma was led by freshman Joanna Schmitt's 11 kills. Anna Mosen had the team-high eight digs while Jennifer Adams had four blocks. Keri Coats landed three of the Sooners' four service aces.
Washington State and Wichita State entered the nightcap with identical 1-1 records but the Shockers, with a more experienced team, won the first, fourth and fifth games for the second-place finish. Sara Younes, an all-tournament selection, led all players with 19 kills while Karen Augspurger had 17 digs. Washington State was led by the 13 kills and seven blocks from Jennifer Todd and the 10 blocks from Jen Barcus. All-tournament selections Kristen Carlson and Brenn Larson had 15 digs and 45 assists respectively.
'I'm really disappointed and the kids are really disappointed,' Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said at the tournament conclusion. 'I also have to look at tonight and say we spent two weeks of preseason with more injuries than I've had in the last three years combined. So our practices have been limited in what we can do and it affected the way they played. They haven't really played together and we haven't seen the same six people on the court. Those things showed up tonight.'
In the first session Saturday, the very youthful Washington State team struggled against USF. The Cougs gave up 11 service aces to the Dons while recording 13 service errors themselves. WSU rallied to win the fourth game 30-28, but went flat in the fifth game, losing 15-5. Kristen Carlson, a redshirt freshman, led WSU with 16 kills (.239), five service aces, 21 digs and five blocks. Freshman Jennifer Todd and senior Zanda Bautre contributed 14 kills each with Bautre also digging up 21 balls and Todd blocking seven at the net. Setter Brenn Larson had 56 assists and 16 digs.
USF had four players in double-figure kills with Budinger and Russell each pounding 19 kills. Russell also blocked six attacks and Liz MacAusland led six players in double-digit digs with 20. Setter April Scoggin had 61 assists.
Wichita State opened Saturday's contests with a 3-1 win over Oklahoma. The Shockers needed extra chances in the fourth and final game, winning 36-34. Jackie Brown led Wichita State with 17 kills while Lara Geer was the digs leader with 16. Oklahoma's Joanna Schmitt tallied 16 kills and Yvette Villanueva had 10 digs. Sooner Laura Tomes led all players with seven blocks.
The Cougars travel to Salt Lake City next weekend for the Utah Hampton Inn Classic Tournament and will take on Missouri, Utah Valley State and host Utah,.
