LOS ANGELES - Seniors Toni Anderson, Nicole Davis and April Ross led the top-ranked USC women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-21, 30-16, 30-25) victory over eighth-ranked Northern Iowa (2-1) to close the USC-Holiday Inns of the Greater L.A. Area Volleyball Tournament at the Lyon Center on Saturday night. Anderson and Davis were named to the all-tournament team and Ross was honored as tournament MVP. With the tournament sweep, the Women of Troy improve to 5-0.
In the early match, South Carolina defeated Ball State in five, 30-25, 22-30, 30-14, 25-30, 15-9, to earn its first win of the year. The Gamecocks finished the tournament 2-1, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-3 to start the season.
Outsized by the Trojans' front line, the Panthers struggled through the first two games. USC held Northern Iowa to a .000 attack percentage in game one and a -.059 mark in game two.
Despite the 2-0 deficits, the Panthers came back from the break re-energized for game three. The teams matched each other point-for-point at the start, reaching an 11-11 tie. Northern Iowa then took its first lead of the match following kills by Molly O'Brien and Michelle Burvee to go ahead 16-13. But the Panthers' advantage did not last long as the Women of Troy knotted the score at 20-20, then regained the lead. USC forced five Northern Iowa errors and tallied three aces in the final stretch to finish off the match with a 30-25 final game victory.
Keao Burdine lead the Trojans in the match with 18 kills and a total of 20.5 points. Katie Olsovsky and Bibiana Candelas both posted error-free performances and posted .500 and .462 hitting performances, respectively. Candelas and Emily Adams each added five blocks and Anderson and Burdine added nine digs apiece.
Ross, Anderson and Davis displayed outstanding performances in all three outings. Ross hit .338, averaged 3.78 kills, 0.56 aces, 1.56 digs and 4.67 points per game. Anderson averaged 10.89 assists per game as she helped lead seven different hitters to outstanding performances in all three sweeps. Davis led all liberos with an average 3.62 digs per game.
USC hosts fifth-ranked Pepperdine on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center. The 2002 national championship team will be honored at the start of the match and the championship banner will be presented.
