OSU Tops San Diego 2-1
Oregon State sophomore Matt Johnson's goal in the 80th minute lifted the men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the University of San Diego Sunday afternoon at USD's Torero Stadium. OSU evened its record at 1-1-0 in the process.
Johnson sent home the winning score from 13 yards out on a one-time shot into the side netting after a pass from freshman Robbie Findley.
Findley, who was in on both scores, took a flick from Ryan Johnson and beat a USD defender to set up the pass.
Findley had evened the match in the 70th minute when he sent a shot from 10 yards past a diving Lance Friesz in the USD goal. The Phoenix, Ariz., native recorded his first career goal and assist on the day, and junior transfer Evan McNeley tallied his first assist on Findley's equalizer.
'The performance was spectacular,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said of his squad. 'We were down 1-0 and the guys showed resiliency and resolve and they kept fighting. I'm proud of the way they played today.'
All of the game's scoring came in a 19-minute span, as the Torero's Andrew Erich collected a rebounded shot from Scott Burcar and scored in the 61st minute to give USD a brief 1-0 lead.
OSU was outshot 11-5 by the Toreros, but the Beaver defense allowed only four shots to be placed on goal; OSU keeper Peter Billmeyer made three saves.
The Beavers beat USD for the first time in the four-game series dating back to 1997.
OSU's next action comes Thursday, Sept. 4 at Sacramento State before traveling to Portland for a match with its in-state rival on Sunday.
