Penalty Kicks Determine Result In 4-3 Loss At Florida

Aug. 31, 2003

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Dena Floyd scored two penalty kicks in the second half Sunday and the Florida Gators defeated the No. 21 USC Trojans, 4-3, in non-conference action at Percy Beard Stadium. Floyd's two goals came as the Gators played down a player after Candace Rivers received a red card in the 48th minute.

Florida (2-0) defeated two ranked opponents this weekend after Friday's 2-1 win against No. 7 Penn State. USC falls to 1-1 after Friday's 2-1 win at No. 13 Florida State.

'I like what I saw this weekend, but we could have been 2-0 this weekend,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'The heat took its toll on us, but I think the freshmen gained some valuable game experience.'

Trojan senior Jessica Edwards scored first for USC at 4:25 on a scramble in front after a corner kick. Florida's Crystal Frimpong evened the match at 21:08 after beating USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson on a 50-50 ball from 15 yards out.

USC took the lead again when freshman Rosa Anna Tantillo scored her first collegiate goal at 23:24 on a breakaway, beating Florida goalie Brittni Goodwin on the right side for a 2-1 lead. The Gators came back before halftime on another goal off a long ball at 40:30 as Robin Fulton tied the match.

The Women of Troy was called for a foul in the penalty box at 55:49 and Floyd converted on her first penalty kick. Floyd scored again at 76:10 for the game-winning goal for the Gators.

Tantillo added her second goal of the game on the third penalty kick of the half at 79:30 for the Women of Troy.

USC travels to the 2003 Nike Challenge next weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Women of Troy will face Marquette on Friday (Sept. 5) at 2 p.m. and host Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 7) at noon.
