Buddy Teevens Press Conference Quotes
Sept. 2, 2003
On the quarterbacks
'Chris Lewis has had a good preseason for us. He has rehabbed his shoulder effectively and has shown great concentration and focus on his performance during the summer and in the preseason. Based on that we are giving him the starting nod. Trent Edwards has been very productive as well. He really has improved and worked to learn the system making him effective in practice. We feel that this warrants him the opportunity at a starting position as well. Our team is fortunate to have two guys who can be effective on our offense. I expect them both to play very well.'
On Stanford's depth
'We have some great competition at every position: guards, receivers, running backs. And if you have guys who have the ablility to play, it keeps the competitive level high. The attitude of the players is that we have guys who can step in and any of them can do the job if they are asked. I think it demonstrates growth and development in this program when we have guys who can play at a No. 1 or No. 2 position. The speed of the game demands physically that you have those people who can step up.'
On freshman class
'We had a large group of freshman and a majority of the class will be redshirting. We feel that the rest of the young guys are ready to go. Micheal Okwo is an intelligent football player who reacts well. Mark Bradford is very athletic and has grasped the offense well. David Marrero at running back has the skills to help the team schematically. Patrick Danahy at tight end is physically more mature and has learned quickly. Brandon Harrison has also adjusted to the collegiate level well. We have a lot of young faces on the offensive line, but they can run the game. The youth up front has developed well in the off season. These kids will be wide-eyed on their first snap, but they are all capable of playing at a high level.'
On San Jose State
'San Jose State is extremely talented. They have outstanding experience and can both pressure the passer and protect their passer. They are a very physical football team and can run extremely well. Schematically, they have a lot of people around the football and can challenge the run.
On scrimmage with UC Davis
'The scrimmage with Davis helped us out with our gameday operation and subsitution. It gave us the opportunity to go one-on-one with some different competition. Gameday, though, is much different and we will be ready to play on Saturday.'
'Kirk is very talented and has trained well in the off season to come back stronger than a year ago. He can be a productive force for us. But more importantly has been his mentorship with the young kids and his leadership with the whole tea. We don't have many seniors this year, so I am really proud of the job he has done.'
On the running backs
'Kenneth Tolon, J.R. Lemon, Gerald Commisiong and David Marerro will be productive in the back end. Kenneth shows flash in lots of different areas. J.R. has grown and made some progress to be a force on the run. In all, we have a lot of depth at this position.'
On Amon Gordon
'Amon has made a tremendous transition sliding inside. He is a tough guy to block with lots of speed, power and explosiveness. We will see a lot from No. 18 on Saturday.'
On coaching staff
'We have really adapted to the personnel and that's a plus. Bill Cubit has a wealth of experience in play calling and is really comfortable with our offensive scheme. Defensively, A.J. Christoff also has a long history of play calling and will work closely with Tom Williams. We are excited to get the first opportunity to see these guys in action.'
