Sept. 2, 2003
SEATTLE- With the upset of No. 17 Wisconsin in the opening weekend of the season, the Washington volleyball team propelled itself into this week's USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll at the No. 23 position. UW, who received votes but was not listed on the Aug. 11 preseason poll, makes its first appearance in the rankings since Nov. 11, 2002.
Washington notched three wins in the opening weekend of the season to win the Badger Invitational on Aug. 30. The Huskies defeated UMKC, New Hampshire and Wisconsin in straight games.
Last season, the Huskies appeared in the top 25 poll twice, debuting at No. 21 on Nov. 4 and dipping to No. 22 on Nov. 11.
Six of Washington's scheduled opponents for the 2003 season are listed in this week's top 25 poll, including three in the top 10. The remaining matches slated against ranked teams pits UW against five Pac-10 foes, including No. 1 USC, No. 4 Stanford, No. 10 Arizona, No. 11 UCLA and No. 22 California. Wisconsin remains in the poll at No. 24 after slipping seven positions following the loss to the Huskies.
Washington continues its pre-conference schedule this week at the IPWF Tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Huskies will take on Middle Tennessee State on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4:30 p.m. (CT), before facing Ohio (11 a.m.) and IPFW (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
