Beavers Defeat Georgetown In Five Games

Sept. 5, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Allison Lawrence and Katelyn Healy posted double-doubles to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Georgetown on Friday night at the Sacramento State Invitational. Game scores were 30-23, 25-30, 30-18, 27-30 and 15-5.

Lawrence finished with a match-high 21 kills and a career-high 17 digs. Healy recorded the first double-double of her career with 14 kills and 13 digs, both career-highs.

The win boosted OSU's record to 6-0, while the Hoyas dropped to 1-4. The victory was OSU's second five-game win of the day and third of the season. It's an improvement from a year ago when the Beavers lost all four of the five-game matches they played in 2002.

'These five-game wins are starting to give us confidence. We go into the fifth game thinking we're going to win them,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'I have to credit our strength and conditioning program, because that's what won these matches today. We made a commitment to being in great shape, and we outlasted these teams today.'

Joining Lawrence and Healy with double-figures in the kills column was Amanda Eggert, who finished with 11. Ashley Lancaster led the Hoyas with 17, and two other Georgetown players registered double-figures.

Two other Beavers joined Lawrence and Healy with 10 or more digs. Michelle Franz had a career-high 10 digs, and K.C. Frederic also had 10 as the Beavers outdug the Hoyas, 76-68.

OSU had a season-high team effort at the net, as the Beavers outblocked Georgetown 14-10. Eggert had a hand in six blocks, and Laura Collins and Michelle Franz each finished with five.

'Our blocking was huge tonight, particularly in games four and five. They really came on strong late in the match, and that's when you really need it,' Somera said.

The Beavers tied their season-high of 15 aces, with Lawrence serving a career-high six.

After two freshmen saw their first collegiate action against UC Riverside earlier on Friday, another Beaver rookie saw her first playing time against Georgetown. Taylor Studzinski played in three games with three kills, four digs and an ace. Four of OSU's six freshmen have played in at least one match this year.

OSU continues competition at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday, facing Fresno State at 11:30 a.m. and the host Hornets at 7:30 p.m.
