California Falls in Home Opener, 1-0, to Old Dominion
Sept. 5, 2003
Berkeley, CA - Cal lost 1-0 in the adidas Cal Legacy Classic today at Edwards Stadium. The Bears displayed the dominance throughout the majority of the game, which made them 10-1-0 last year at home. While they controlled the game, they were unable to equalize.
In the fourth minute of the game, Old Dominion went on top, 1-0, when midfielder Kevon Harris put a ball through the Cal defense to teammate Kevin McMenamin. McMenamin did not hesitate as he put a swerving right to left shot past Cal goalkeeper Brian Walker into the net.
From that point on, Cal played an attacking game. Old Dominion only managed two more shots and no shots on goal against the tightened back line, led by Noah Merl and Troy Roberts. Unfortunately, that first goal was all the Monarchs would need.
Cal pressed hard in the second half with the majority of the action in the Old Dominion end. Noah Merl hit several hard shots from long range that challenged Monarch goalkeeper Samuel Cameron and he led the Bears with five shots. Kyle Navarro played several good balls into good positions, and Mike Munoz and Carl Acosta pressured the defense with runs.
The Bears are now 0-3 but will not have to wait long to hit the field again. Sunday marks the finale of the adidas Cal Legacy Classic as Cal plays host to Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. CSF was a loser in double overtime earlier in the day to Stanford, 1-0. Stanford plays Old Dominion on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
