Devine Nets Golden Goal in 1-0 Victory over St. Mary's

Sept. 5, 2003

LOS ANGELES - Forward Kim Devine scored a golden goal in the eighth minute of overtime, lifting the No. 2 UCLA women's soccer team to a 1-0 decision over St. Mary's Friday evening in the Third-Annual UCLA Women's Cup at Spaulding Field. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 2-0-2 on the season, while St. Mary's falls to 1-2.

Devine's game-winning goal came at the 97:08 mark of the first overtime period. A high, bouncing ball was sent to the top of the St. Mary's box, prompting Gael goalkeeper Alicia Artuso to come out and challenge for it. Bruin forward Iris Mora jumped up with Artuso and managed to knock it loose. Devine ran onto it and put it away into the empty net, giving UCLA the overtime victory. Mora was credited with the assist.

The Bruin defense dominated most of the match, holding St. Mary's to just three shots on the evening. UCLA's offense however, registered 24 shots, including a match-high five from Bruin freshman Stephanie Kron.

Bruin goalkeeper Sarah Lombardo registered her second shutout of the season, making one save. Artuso finished with 13.

The final match of the 2003 UCLA Women's Cup will be on Sunday, when St. Mary's and UC Santa Barbara battle at Noon. That match will be at Drake Stadium.

UCLA will be in action again next week when it travels to Loyola Marymount for a tournament Sept. 12-14. The Bruins take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sept. 12 at 1:00 p.m. and Oakland on Sept. 14 at 11:00 a.m.
