Sept. 5, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Three Beavers finished with double-figure kills as the Oregon State volleyball team eked out a 3-2 win over UC Riverside in the first match at the Sacramento State Invitational on Friday morning. OSU (5-0) came from behind to post the 22-30, 31-29, 25-30, 30-27, 15-12 victory over the Highlanders (1-3).

'This was a great team effort. I really liked the competitive fortitude we had. We didn't play well, but we found a way to win,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'You've got to like it when your team gets the 'W' even though the other team led every statistical category. We made things happen even though we weren't playing our best.'

The Highlanders had more digs (87-78), more blocks (11-6) and more aces (11-5) than the Beavers. They also finished with a .253 hitting percentage, while OSU hit .241.

Allison Lawrence led OSU with 19 kills, and Amanda Eggert hit .340 with a career-high 18 kills. Rookie Brittany Cahoon came off the bench to hit .545 with a career-high 14 kills. UCR's Rosanna Parizek led all players with 20 kills on .378 hitting.

Lawrence also led the Beavers with 17 digs. K.C. Frederic added 13 and Katelyn Healy had a career-high 11 digs. UCR's Jamie DeKiewiet had a match-high 25 digs.

Desma Stovall finished with 29 assists, eight digs and six kills - all career-highs - and Laura Collins had 27 assists, three kills and six digs.

Two freshmen saw their first collegiate action as Michelle Franz had eight digs in four games and Abby Windell had three kills and six digs in two games.

'The rookies came in and played a big role in this win. We needed them today, and they did a great job,' Somera said.

OSU continues tournament action against Georgetown at 5:00 p.m. Friday. The Beavers will face Fresno State and Sacramento State on Saturday.
