Volleyball Hands Miami (Fla.) First Loss Of The Season With 3-0 Sweep
Sept. 5, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz.- The No. 10 Arizona volleyball team finally won its first home match of the season and ended Miami's unbeaten streak of five straight matches to open the year in the process Friday night at the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic. Game scores of the three-game sweep were 32-30, 30-18, 30-28. The win evened Arizona record at 3-3 while Miami fell to 5-1 with the loss.
Unlike Arizona's two previous matches in the Wildcat Classic, the Wildcats' serve found their mark more often than not on Friday night. Arizona, which had committed a combined 41 service errors in two matches on Thursday, posted just nine on Friday and also finished with six aces as well.
Arizona's service and defense limited the Hurricane offense all night and especially the 2002 Big East Player of the Year Valeria Tipiana. Tipiana, who finished with just seven kills against the Wildcats on Friday, entered the night with a Wildcat Classic two-match total of 46.
As a team, the Wildcats out hit the Hurricanes .330 to .155, out-blocked them nine to three and posted 45 digs to UM's 31.
Sophomore Kim Glass, who got off to a shaky start with three quick hitting errors in game one, posted a double-double on the night with a season-high 24 kills on .422 hitting and 15 digs. All three numbers were match-highs.
Classmates Jennifer Abernathy and Bre Ladd added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Ladd also tallied a match-high five total blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs. Freshman setter Stephanie Butkus dished out 45 assists and came up with nine digs in the win.
Arizona will close out the 2003 Wildcat Classic against Rhode Island (1-6) on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for noon at McKale Center.
