Sept. 5, 2003
MOSCOW, Idaho-Washington State's Danny Wolf successfully defended his title at the Idaho Jamboree Cross Country Meet, Friday with a time of 19:54. Meanwhile, on the women's side, Anna Blue finished second with a time of 14:42.
The WSU men outran Idaho (18-41). The Cougar women beat Eastern Washington (15-46) and were defeated by Idaho (20-38).
Wolf, a junior who had set his sights on beating 20 minutes, jumped out to a quick start before tiring midway through the race. However, after being passed briefly, by teammate Mike Heidt, he outkicked Heidt to the finish. Heidt, a junior, also broke the 20 minute mark, posting a time of 19:58 to finish second. Senior Ian Johnson also had a strong performance finishing fourth with a time of 20:09. Other Cougar runners contributing included freshmen Andrew Jones and Ryan Freimuth, who finished fifth and seventh respectively, senior Steve Barrus who finished 12th, sophomore Reid Carrell, who finished 14th and junior Justin Ireland, who finished 15th. Other Cougars running unattached with impressive finishes were freshmen Matt Knoff (8th), Chris Williams (13th), Geoff Casazza (20th), Chris Concha (26th), and Daniel Frederick (33rd).
'Ian Johnson improved a lot from last year, which showed that he did some work this summer,' said WSU Cross Country Coach Jason Drake. 'Barrus looked better than he has in practice so he's getting into better shape too.'
Leading the way for the Cougars in the women's race was second place finisher, senior Anna Blue with a time of 14:42, which is a 40 seconds improvement over last year's race. Juniors Ana Cabrera, Julia Corbett and Molly Bull had impressive performances finishing 10th, 11th, and 12th. Freshman Kayle Peterson had a strong race finishing second for the Cougs and sixth overall. While freshman Karen DeMartini, who ran unattached took seventh. Other WSU racers were Kelly Ramirez (17th), Katie Troy (18th), Natalie Smith (21st), Grace Coulter (24th), and Hailey Young (26th).
'Kayle Peterson ran a really good race and Karen DeMartini running unattached looked really good for us,' said Drake. 'I'd give our team an A plus today.'
Next up for the Cougars is the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. and the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, both Sept. 27.
