Sept. 6, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer Chris Nallen helped the United States to a 7-5 lead Saturday after the first day of play at the 2003 Walker Cup Matches in Ganton, North Yorkshire, England.

Nallen, a senior from Blairstown, N.J., was one of five members of Team U.S.A. to win in Saturday's singles matches to give the United States a 7-5 lead over Great Britain and Ireland at the conclusion of the first day of play. Nallen defeated Great Britain and Ireland's Colm Moriarity, 2-up, by clinching the match with a par on the 17th hole.

Nallen and the rest of his U.S. teammates' play in Saturday's singles competition helped the squad rally from a 3-1 deficit following the morning foursomes. Only the U.S. team of Bill Haas and Trip Kuehne managed to win its opening match. Nallen and partner Ryan Moore were defeated, 3 and 2, by Nigel Edwards and Stuart Manley.

The 39th Walker Cup Matches run through Sunday at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, a par 71, 6,894-yard layout. Ten-member teams consisting of amateur players from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland will vie for the Walker Cup in a competition that consists of 16 singles and eight foursomes (alternate shot) matches. One point is awarded for each match and there are 24 total points available. The United States leads the overall competition 31-6-1, though Great Britain and Ireland has won the last two meetings.

Nallen is the fourth University of Arizona golfer to represent the U.S. in Walker Cup competition, joining Robert Gamez (1989), Eric Meeks (1989) and David Berganio (1991).
