No. 18 Missouri Sweeps WSU Volleyball
Sept. 6, 2003
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Missouri swept Washington State 30-28, 31-29, 30-25, Saturday morning at the Utah Hampton Inn Classic Tournament. The 18th-ranked Tigers remained undefeated in five matches while the Cougars dropped to 1-4.
This match was the Shen Danu show as the 5-11, outside hitter from China lead Missouri with 16 kills, 15 digs, four aces and four blocks. Mary Lauren Smith added 11 kills while Sara Parks had 12 digs.
Zanda Bautre and Jennifer Todd combined for 24 kills and Bautre dug up 12. Liz Spear, seeing her first action of the tournament, added four blocks to the Cougar effort. Freshmen walk-on setters Kali Richards and Ashley Bristol combined for 33 assists. WSU's Brenn Larson, sophomore setter and 2002 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team selection, did not make the trip to Utah as she is recovering from a high ankle sprain.
In the first game, Washington State, starting four true freshmen, had the lead through the first 18 points. Missouri had a 7-4 run before the Cougs countered with five straight points and a 27-25 lead. Two ball-handling errors did WSU in as kills from Danru and Smith and an ace from Lindsey Noll gave the Tigers the game, 30-28.
Cougars ran off to a 19-15 lead in game two before the Tigers ran off seven consecutive points and took the 22-19 lead. WSU out-scored Missouri 10-5, and were at game point, 29-27, when the wheels fell off the winning wagon. Noll put down a kill and put up a block to tie the score at 29. Cougar setting and hitting errors gave Missouri the 31-29 win.
Missouri took a 28-19 lead and then held off a late WSU charge of five straight points to win the third game 30-25.
This is the first time in WSU Head Coach Cindy Fredrick's 15 years the Cougars have lost four consecutive non-conference matches.
The Cougars meet Utah Valley State (1-4) at 5 p.m. MT Saturday night.
