No. 23 Volleyball Wins IPFW Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The No. 23-ranked Washington volleyball team defeated IPFW (4-4) to win the IPFW Invitational this evening (30-16, 30-28, 30-27). The Huskies' 6-0 record marks Washington's best start since 1987, when UW opened the season with a 9-0 record.

Junior Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) was named the tournament MVP for the second straight week as she averaged 6.80 kills per game and averaged 3.00 digs per game. She powered the Husky offense in tonight's championship game, slamming down 23 kills, while also picking up her second double-double of the day with 10 digs. Brie Hagerty (Defiance, Ohio) fell just short of a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs, while Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.) chipped in nine kills with a match-high .615 hitting percentage.

Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.) dished 47 assists, while also picking up 10 digs. Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) led UW in digs for the sixth-straight match with 13, while Darla Myhre (Vancouver, B.C.) had four blocks in the winning effort.

Joining Tomasevic on the all-tournament team were Lee and Bjorkund. Lee finished the three-match tournament with 4.70 digs per game, including a 20 dig performance against Ohio earlier today. Bjorklund averaged 2.50 kills per game with a team-best .413 hitting percentage.

The Huskies continue life on the road with three away matches next week. Washington will play at Idaho State on Sept. 10, before taking part in the Idaho Tournament. UW will play Idaho on Sept. 12 and Northern Arizona on Sept. 13.
