Baker Scores A Pair Of Goals In A 4-2 Beaver Victory
Sept. 7, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Tessa Baker was inches away from a hat trick as the OSU women's soccer team continued its winning ways with a 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon against the University of Idaho at Lorenz Field. With the win, the Beavers improved their record to 3-0-1, while the Vandals dropped to 1-1-2.
OSU got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute when Lindsey Beem's free kick found the head of Brianna Monka for the first goal of the game. The goal came from seven yards out as Monka placed the ball into the far right corner for her third goal of the season.
Janelle Joy tallied her second goal of the season in the 39th minute off a well-played ball from Jillian Nicks. Nicks, being pressured in the box passed the ball out to Joy who sent it in from eight yards out.
In the second half, the Beavers' Tessa Baker started the scoring with an athletic drive to the goal in the 53rd minute. Baker dribbled 35 yards from the left side of the field to take on Idaho goalkeeper Lindsay Smith one-on-one. Baker sent a low shot past Smith that found the right side of the net, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead.
Baker kept the Beavers rolling with another goal in the 73rd minute with the assist coming from Jennifer Crump. The play started when Crump centered the ball to Baker who sent the ball into the right- upper corner from eight yards out.
Baker had a good chance for her first career hat trick in the 80th minute when her shot from 30 yards out hit the crossbar twice before Smith took the ball off the line for the save.
'I was very pleased with our performance today,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'We had plenty of opportunities, and scored some quality goals.
'Tessa Baker came close to a hat trick today and is coming into form nicely, and Brianna Monka has been chipping in with roughly a goal per game. I thought Melena Ertler played an outstanding game at center back today as well.'
Idaho's Kristi Rubusto scored two goals, both in the 89th minute to bring the score to its 4-2 finale. Rubusto's first goal came from a scramble after a corner kick in which Caitlyn Wicks passed the ball to Rubusto, who took the pass and put in past Beaver backup goalkeeper Amy Johnson.
Just 35 seconds later, Rubusto found a loose ball in the box and sent it to the far post and found the netting. Rubusto's two goals in 35 seconds was believed to be the shortest time between goals at Lorenz Field for a visiting team.
Baker finished the game with 10 shots, tying the previous OSU record for most shots in a game. She is also now tied with Monka for the most goals this season with three each. In all, OSU outshot Idaho 29-7 on the afternoon.
Crump tallied the first assist of her career and Beavers goalkeeper Melissa Onstad has only given up one goal in 365 minutes played.
The Beavers' next two games are at Wake Forest's adidas Tournament, where OSU squares off with Duke on Sept. 12 and Wake Forest on Sept. 14.
