Bears host Nation's Best

Sept. 8, 2003

Four of the best teams in America meet, here in northern California, this coming weekend for preseason action that will have all the feel of a NCAA championship caliber competition.

Cal hosts the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic, presented by Nike, starting September 12th and ending on the 14th. The competition will be played in the gorgeous Meadowood Napa Valley, and will consist of four of the top collegiate tennis teams the United States has to offer.

The Bears welcome to the west coast defending NCAA Champion Illinois, Georgia, and Texas A+M - giving fans a chance to see some of tomorrow's tennis stars today. Each team will bring eight of their players to Napa for a unique display of power, quickness, and crosscourt fun.

Only in its third year, The Classic has already established a distinction that gives fans reason to take notice of the event. The last two NCAA champions USC and Illinois both competed in the Audi Napa Valley Classic in the falls preceding their championship springs - adding to its prestige and to the premonition that this event is a precursor for greatness.

Tournament Director and Cal men's tennis coach Peter Wright says, 'The players love the tournament and it has become one of college tennis' elite events. Tennis fans are treated to four top teams playing in an intimate setting. It's paradise for fans and players.'

Friday and Saturday, play will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day with both singles and doubles matches. On Sunday, play begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at noon with singles actions.
