Both Bruin Golf Teams Ranked No.2 Nationally
Sept. 8, 2003
The UCLA men's and women's golf teams each secured a No.2 national ranking to begin the 2003-04 collegiate season, according GolfWeek's Sept. 6 issue.
The men's team ranks behind defending NCAA champion Clemson, and is followed by third-ranked Florida, No.4 Oklahoma State and fifth-ranked Georgia. This is the highest preseason ranking for the Bruins since the 1981-82 team topped the polls.
The women's team ranks behind Duke, which finished 10th at the 2002 NCAA Championships. Ranked below the Bruins are No.3 Ohio State, fourth-ranked Oklahoma State and fifth-ranked Texas. This is the highest ranking for the women's team since 1991, the year the Bruins won the NCAA title.
Both UCLA teams return several experienced players. The men's team returns every player that participated in the 2003 NCAA tournament in which the Bruins finished third. The women's team tied for fifth at last year's NCAA championships and returns every player that participated in the national championship.
In addition, junior All-American Charlotte Mayorkas is ranked fifth in the preseason individual poll. Last season, Mayorkas won her first tournament and led the Bruins in scoring average.
