Competing in her first major international competition at the IAAF Track and Field World Championships in Paris, France last month, former Cal star Grace Upshaw made the long jump finals and placed eighth (21-2.75).
As a Golden Bear athlete in Berkeley, Upshaw posted the fourth-best mark in Cal's history of the long jump with a leap of 20-5.75 in 1997. After completing her career at Cal, Upshaw has enjoyed many successes, as she won the 2003 USA Outdoor long jump title and 2002 USA Indoor title. In 2002 and 2001, she finished as the runner-up in long jump at the USA Outdoor championships. Also, this year, Upshaw jumped a personal record mark of 22-1.50.
Upshaw continues to compete in Europe with stops in both Germany and Monte Carlo. Her sister Joy Margerum serves as an assistant coach for the Golden Bears' track and field program.
