California Repeats as Mid Pines Intercollegiate Champion
Sept. 9, 2003
Southern Pines, NC - The Golden Bears returned to the Mid Pines Intercollegiate as champions and left the same way they came in. California's men's golf team brought its five golfers to the par 72, 6528 yard Southern Pines course and won the tournament with an overall score of 832 (-32) over the 54-hole event. Xavier finished in second place with a score of 832 (-28) and Central Florida finished third posting a total of 854 (-10).
Cal junior Jeff Hood (202) carded a tournament low 64 (-8) in his first round and followed that performance with a 67 (-5) and 71 (-1) to claim the individual tournament crown. He edged out Central Florida's Barry Roof (203) by one stroke. Roof was the only golfer to score every round in the 60s, but it was not enough. Defending champion and Cal sophomore Michael Wilson (207) finished in third place. He saved his best round for last, posting a 67 (-5) on Tuesday.
Cal and second-place finisher Xavier were the only teams in the field to place all five golfers in the top 25.
Senior Peter Tomasulo (213) and senior Scott Carlyle (213) finished tied for 13th place. Tomasulo was as steady as they come, posting a 71 (-1) during all three rounds. Carlyle followed up consecutive 73s (+1) with a 67 (-5) on the final day.
Senior Jesse Ruda (217), who did not know he was headed to North Carolina until late last week, was the final Cal golfer. He finished tied for 25th, posting his best score, 68 (-4), during the final round.
Cal entered the final round of competition with a slim one shot lead over Wichita State and Xavier. Despite Hood's outstanding first-round performance, the Bears would not have won without a strong final day. Cal was the only team to have every golfer shoot under par in the final round.
In seems as if the Cal men's golf team is as deep and talented as Coach Steve Desimone suspected. Only half of the 14 teams finished under par, with five of the seven finishing at -10 or worse. Several teams had excellent individual performances, but only Xavier came close to rivaling the overall performance of Cal.
