No. 16 Cal Defeats New Hampshire, 3-0

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 16 ranked Cal women's volleyball team (6-0) won its opening match of the 2003 Golden Bear Invitational, defeating New Hampshire (3-5), 3-0 (30-21, 30-12, 30-23) Thursday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Bears, led by junior All-American Mia Jerkov's 19 kills and 11 digs, have now won 15 straight regular season tournament matches, carrying over from the 2002 season. In the opening game of the Golden Bear Invitational, Cal Poly (6-2) defeated Nevada (4-5), 30-20, 30-25, 30-32, 28-30, 16-14.
Cal had an impressive performance in its season home opener at Haas Pavilion. Besides Jerkov's efforts, junior outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy played well, recording seven kills and a career-high seven service aces. Junior middle hitter Camille Leffall added a .714 hitting percentage (five kills, no errors, seven attempts) and had a team-high five total blocks (two solo blocks, three block assists).
The Bears held the Wildcats to a .037 team hitting percentage. Alyson Coler paced New Hampshire with eight kills and 12 digs.
The Bears will next host Nevada Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The rest of the Golden Bear Invitational schedule is as follows:
