Findley's Two Scores Lead OSU To Comeback Win

Sept. 12, 2003

A pair of goals by Oregon State freshman Robbie Findley led a second-half charge by the men's soccer team that saw the Beavers come back from an early 2-0 deficit and earn a 4-2 win over the previously undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-1-0) Friday afternoon at Lorenz Field.

The game was the second of the day in the OSU Diadora Classic; Illinois-Chicago earned a 2-1 overtime win against St. Mary's in the first match.

Findley scored OSU's equalizer in the 59th minute after Christian vanBlommestein and Alan Gordon flicked a pair of passes to Findley at the far post, where he scored from eight yards out.

Findley headed in his second goal in under two minutes off a cross from Ryan Johnson at the 59 minute, 29 second mark to give the Beavers the lead for good at 3-2. Findley, from Phoenix, Ariz., leads the Beavers with four goals this year.

With OSU (3-2-0) trailing 2-0 late in the first half, freshman Bryan Jordan made his first collegiate appearance and scored minutes later off a deflected Ryan Johnson pass to bring OSU to within 2-1 at the 38:08 mark. Johnson was credited with two assists on the day.

Gonzaga built a lead early, as Scott Yuska capitalized on a free kick that deflected off the OSU wall and past a diving Peter Billmeyer in the OSU goal at the 5:05 mark.

In the 12th minute, Arni Pjetursson blasted a shot that was deflected by an OSU defender and corralled by GU's Scott Bertram for the score and a 2-0 lead.

Alan Gordon supplied OSU's final goal after Matt Johnson played a ball out wide to Ross Duncan, who crossed a pass to Gordon at the far post. Gordon headed it in at 69:37 to make it 4-2.

Despite being down 2-0, the Beavers owned an 8-4 shot advantage early on and outshot the Bulldogs 25-12 for the game.

With the win, OSU improved to 4-1 in home openers under coach Dana Taylor.

GU keeper Vito Higgins made seven saves and Billmeyer made five.

In the day's first match, UIC's Peter Kelley lifted the Flames to a 2-1 overtime win with a 25-yard blast in the fifth minute of the extra session.

The Flames opened the scoring in the 51st minute when Roberto Gallo's shot was deflected by SMC keeper Kellan Wilson to John DeVae, who slipped a shot into an open net.

Matthew Walker leveled the match at 1-1 in the 78th minute with an unassisted shot from 20 yards.

The Diadora Classic continues Sunday as Gonzaga and UIC square off at 12 p.m., followed by OSU and St. Mary's at 2 p.m.
