No. 16 Cal Volleyball Tops Nevada, 3-0, in Second Day of Golden Bear Invite

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 16 ranked Cal women's volleyball team (7-0) won its second match of the 2003 Golden Bear Invitational, defeating Nevada (4-6), 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 33-31) Friday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Bears were led by 17 kills from junior outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy, and 16 kills and a team-high 11 digs from junior All-American Mia Jerkov. Cal has now won 16 straight regular season tournament matches, carrying over from the 2002 season. In the opening game of Friday's round of the Golden Bear Invitational, Cal Poly (7-2) defeated New Hampshire (3-6), 30-17, 30-22, 30-28.

Abernathy, who redshirted last season, continues to shine during the Golden Bear Invitational, leading Cal with her 17 kills and .424 hitting percentage (17 kills, three errors, 33 attempts) against the Wolf Pack. She played extremely well in the Bears' third game against Nevada, helping Cal comeback from a 24-23 deficit by recording six of the Bears' last seven points on kills. Abernathy had seven kills and seven service aces Thursday against New Hampshire.

Freshman setter Samantha Carter finished with 41 assists and freshman libero Jillian Davis had nine digs for Cal.

The Bears will next host Cal Poly Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion in an attempt to win their fifth consecutive tournament title. Nevada and New Hampshire will square off in the 5 p.m. match.
