Volleyball Bounces Back With Sweep Over American

TUCSON, Ariz.- Just hours removed from its loss to No. 11-ranked UC Santa Barbara, the No. 14 Arizona volleyball team (6-4) bounced back Saturday afternoon to sweep American University in three games to close the 2003 Four Points University Plaza Arizona Invitational. Game scores were 30-23, 30-21, 30-18.

As a team Arizona dominated the match, out-hitting the Eagles .358 to .067, out-digging them 31 to 23 and out-blocking them nine to three.

Sophomore Kim Glass, who has led Arizona in kills in all 10 matches played this season, finished Saturday with a match-high 17 on .393 hitting. Freshman Meghan Cumpston came off the bench to finish with eight kills and three total blocks in two games played for the Wildcats.

Other standouts in the match for Arizona included Bre Ladd's five block assists, setter Stephanie Butkus' 40 assists, Jolene Killough's eight kills and Jennifer Abernathy's six put-aways on .455 hitting.

Arizona opens Pac-10 play this week when it travels to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of road matches against Washington State on Thursday and at Washington on Friday. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 pm.
