No. 13 Cal Blanks Fresno State, 2-0
Sept. 14, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 13 California scored early and late to defeat Fresno State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears remained unbeaten at 2-0-2, while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-2-1 after playing three games during the last six days on the road.
Sophomore forward Liz Eisenberg gave Cal a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when she intercepted a ball off a Fresno State defender and slotted it past the goalkeeper from about 10 yards. The goal was Eisenberg's second of the season, both being game winners.
Freshman defender Nadia Al-Lami provided an insurance goal for the Bears in the 87th minute on a header off senior midfielder Kimberly Yokers' corner kick. Al-Lami's goal developed from the Bears' ninth corner kick of the day. The goal and assist were Al-Lami's and Yokers' first of the season, respectively.
Goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio recorded two saves to preserve the Bears' second straight shutout. Overall, Cal's defense was sound, limiting the Bulldogs to only five shots, while the Bears posted 15 (five on goal).
'We're getting chances, but we're going to have to work harder to make sure they're on frame,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'That's been plaguing us. We're going to have to do a better job of that. What I liked today was that our possession was better. I thought we knocked the ball around much better today.'
Cal also played without fifth-year senior defenders Lucy Brining and Kim Stocklmeir, who are nursing injuries. Freshman defender Emily Ward and sophomore midfielder Sierra Schlesinger played well in their first starts of the season.
'We played well,' said Boyd. 'We didn't really shake up our lineup as much as we thought last week in training quite a few players were pressing and playing very well. I wanted to give some more people some time and prepare us for some games coming up where we're going to have to play quite a few people to keep our legs for the second game.'
The Bears continue a three-game homestand against Dayton on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. and Princeton on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
