Bruin Men's Cross Country Heads to Hawaii

This Saturday, September 20, Coach Eric Peterson's Bruin men's squad will compete at the third annual Big Wave Invitational in Honolulu, HI. The men's 5K race will take place at 10:30 AM PST, followed by the women's 4K at 10:50 AM, at the Klipper Golf Course on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. Also competing in the men's 5K are Hawaii - Hilo, Hawaii Pacific, Chaminade (HI), Brigham Young University (HI) and Houston. In 2002, the Bruins won the Invitational with 24 points and were led by Jon Rankin (Spring Valley/Monte Vista), who won the men's 5K in 16:03.5.

Running this weekend for the Bruins are freshmen Micky Cobrin (Buffalo Grove, IL/Stevenson), Chad Galbreath (Mammoth Lakes/Mammoth Lakes) and Austin Ramos (Sacramento/Jesuit), sophomores Nick De Felice (Sacramento/Jesuit) and Martell Munguia (Sacramento/Woodcreek), and juniors Ben Aragon (Santee/West Hills), Erik Emilsson (Bjarred, SWE/Polhemskolan) and Reggie Oronoz (Pasadena/Loyola). At last year's meet, Aragon placed fourth, Emilsson was sixth, Munguia placed 11th and De Felice finished 12th.

Last Weekend
On Saturday, September 13, the Bruin 'B' team kicked off the season at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. UCLA placed second, 61 points, behind No. 5 Northern Arizona (30 points). Leading the way for the Bruins were freshmen Ramos and Cobrin. Ramos placed fourth in 26:02 and Cobrin was eighth in 26:10.

Also competing were Galbreath (15th, 26:26), Munguia (17th, 26:32), De Felice (26th, 27:02), Oronoz (27th, 27:03), Craig Hall (31st, 27:07) and Mohammed Qazi (37th, 27:24).
