Gail Devers Named USA T & F Athlete Of The Week

INDIANAPOLIS - UCLA great Gail Devers has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week (Sept. 16) after winning the 100m hurdles in a world-leading time at the inaugural IAAF World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo on Sept. 13-14.
The three-time world 100m hurdles champion, Devers ran 12.45 seconds to tie Jamaican Brigitte Foster's world leading time set on May 25. It's Devers' second weekly honor in 2003. She also named the USA T & F Athlete of the Week during the 2003 indoor season.
Other impressive performers in Monte Carlo include Aretha Hill's U.S. leading mark of 65.10m/213-7 to place second in the women's discus throw. The 2003 world indoor and outdoor champion Dwight Phillips won the men's long jump with a best of 8.31m/27-3.25, and the University of Missouri's Christian Cantwell was a surprise winner in the men's shot put with a best of 20.93m/68-8. Chryste Gaines the 2001 U.S. 100m champion clocked in another personal best this season to win the 100m in 10.86 seconds. The 2003 U.S. 100m champion, Bernard Williams ran a season best of 10.04 to win the men's event. Joshua (JJ) Johnson, the two-time world outdoor championships 4x100m gold medalist, ran 20.35 to win the men's 200m. The 2003 World Outdoor 400m champion, Jerome Young, won his event with a time of 45.04. Allen Johnson, a four-time world outdoor 110m hurdles champion, ran 13.11 in winning his event. The 2003 U.S. high jump champion, Jamie Nieto tied a personal best of 2.30m/7-6.5 placing third with the winner and runner-up making the same mark. Kelli White, the 2003 world outdoor 100 and 200m champion ran 22.31 to win the women's 200m. The 2003 world outdoor championships women's 400m hurdles silver medalist, Sandra Glover ran 53.65 to win her event.
