No. 14 Volleyball Defeats ASU In Pac-10 Opener

SEATTLE- The No. 14 Washington volleyball team (10-0, 1-0 Pac-10) opened the Pac-10 season this evening with a 3-1 victory over Arizona State (5-5, 0-1 Pac-10). The victory is Washington's 10th in a row and sets a program record for best start to a season. Game scores were 18-30, 30-19, 30-26, 30-19.

Junior outside hitter Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) set the pace for the Huskies with her fifth double-double of the season. She threw down a team-high 19 kills, while also collecting 13 digs. Brie Hagerty (Defiance, Ohio) and Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.) added to UW's balanced attack with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Arizona State won the first game, out hitting the Huskies .393 to .029. Natalie Harris sparked the Sun Devil offense with seven of her match-high 20 kills, while Washington's nine kills were shadowed by its eight attack errors and six service errors.

The Huskies found their composure in game two, committing just three errors for a .433 hitting percentage and stepping up their defense with six blocks. Tomasevic led the attack with six kills, while Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) tallied three blocks.

Game three started out in ASU's favor as the Sun Devils built a seven point lead at 12-19. Washington battled back, making a 5-0 run to tie the score at 20-all and the score knotted again at 22-22. UW took its first lead of the game at 24-23 on a kill by Hagerty and pushed that lead to four points on a Jessica Veris (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) ace, a Bjorklund kill and back-to-back kills by Tomasevic to take the 29-25 lead. Arizona State lost the game on a service error into the net.

Washington dominated game four, committing just two attack errors versus ASU's 11. Tomasevic notched five kills in the win, while Bjorklund and Hagerty each chipped in four.

Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) led the Husky defense with 15 digs, while Tomasevic and Alexis McDonald (Long Beach, Calif.) each picked up six blocks.

Freshman setter Courtney Thompson (Kent, Wash.) dished 46 assists on the night and also added seven digs and four kills.

The Huskies continue Pac-10 action tomorrow night when they host No. 16 Arizona at 7 p.m.
