Gescom Viterbo Defeats Stanford 86-85 in Game Two

Sept. 14, 2003

VITERBO, Italy - Game two of Stanford's Italian Tour came down to one point, but Gescom Viterbo was able to pull out the 86-85 victory with a last-second three-pointer on Sunday. The Cardinal currently hold a 1-1 record in their five-game, 12-day exhibition tour of Italy.

Stanford held the lead for most of the contest until Viterbo, a Division 1A professional team, started their come-back with two three-point baskets in the last two minutes of play to drop the Cardinal lead to four points. Viterbo was sent to the charity stripe and sank both free throws to come within two points of Stanford at 85-83. With 3.14 seconds remaining on the game clock, Viterbo made good on a three-point pressure shot to take the lead 86-85.

The Cardinal had time for one last play. Senior Nicole Powell caught the long inbounds pass and put up a 28-foot jumper at the buzzer that grazed the front of the net and gave Viterbo the win. Powell just missed a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Kelley Suminski also tallied 15 points, while Sebnem Kimyacioglu (14), Azella Perryman (13) and Chelsea Trotter (12) posted double digits for the second-straight game.

Stanford next travels to S. Giovanni Valderno, Italy, to take on the S. Giovanni Valdarno BBC, a Division 2B team, on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
