No. 10 Cal Shuts Out No. 22 Dayton 2-0
Sept. 19, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior midfielder Kassie Doubrava scored two goals to lead No. 10 California to a 2-0 shutout of No. 22 Dayton Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears remained unbeaten at 3-0-2 with their third consecutive shutout, while the Flyers dropped to 4-2-1.
'Kassie has been an unsung hero for us for four years,' said Cal's Kevin Boyd, who is the winningest coach in school history at 81-40-8. 'She was kind of like that in high school, as well. She doesn't garner all of the attention all of the time, but she is a good, solid player. She has days like this where she has a couple of nice chances and puts them away.'
Doubrava netted her first goal of the season one minute and 46 seconds into the game. Sophomore midfielder Sierra Schlessinger lofted a long cross from the right side to Doubrava on the left side of the goal. Doubrava corralled the pass and slotted the ball past the keeper into the lower-right corner of the net.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead and a 9-1 shot advantage into the locker room. Dayton's Tesia Kozlowski fired the first shot of the second half, and Cal freshman goalkeeper Anna Key moved to her left to record her first collegiate save. Key received a late starting nod in goal after regular starter Ashley Sulprizio broke her thumb during warm-ups.
Doubrava provided an insurance goal in the 66th minute off assists from sophomore forward Dania Cabello and senior midfielder Kim Stocklmeir, who entered the game for the first time about a minute earlier for Nadia Al-Lami.
'Stock stepped in, and she hasn't even played much for us in the holding midfield,' said Boyd. 'We needed someone who would go in and possess the ball. And, she went in and got an assist on a goal a minute in. She handled the ball extremely well, and she cleaned up the balls in the air. She instantly made a difference.'
The Bears outshot the Flyers 15-3 overall.
Cal looks to remain undefeated when it closes out a three-game homestand Sunday at 1 p.m. against No. 25 Princeton. The Tigers played Sacramento State today.
