No. 12 Cal Sweeps Beavers

Sept. 19, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - California's Mia Jerkov had 23 kills to lead the No. 12 Golden Bears to a 3-0 sweep over the Oregon State volleyball team on Friday night. Game scores were 30-28, 30-11 and 30-22.

The undefeated Golden Bears improved to 10-0 and 2-0 in Pacific-10 play, while the Beavers dropped to 9-4 and 0-2.

Jerkov was the only player for either team to finish with double-figure kills. Allison Lawrence and Amanda Eggert led OSU with seven kills.

'Cal played really well in all parts of the game. They passed, they dug, they covered, they hit, and we had problems doing some of those things,' said coach Nancy Somera.

OSU had a 28-26 lead in game one before Cal rattled off four straight points on three kills and a block to take the game.

'We played OK in game one, but we had a lead and let it slip away,' Somera said. 'We just didn't play well tonight, and when you have a young team, you're going to have nights like that.'

Cal carried the momentum over to the second game, when the Bears broke away from a 7-7 tie with a 10-0 run. The Beavers finally ended the run by scoring on Abby Windell's kill to make it 17-8 in favor of the Bears.

OSU took a 6-2 lead in game three, but Cal put together another rally, this time going on a 7-0 run to go up, 9-7. The Bears led for the remainder of the match.

The Beavers finished with just 32 kills on .079 hitting, while Cal hit .288 with 52 kills.

Cal won the defensive battle between the top two digging teams in the Pac-10. The Bears finished with 51 digs, led by Jillian Davis with 15. OSU had just 33 and failed to have any players finish with double-figures for the first time this year, as Lawrence posted a team-best nine digs.
