Wildcat Cross Country Looks Strong After Dave Murray Invite

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's cross country teams took on the Arizona State Sun Devils and a field of open runners in the Dave Murray Invitational on Friday night. This was the only home meet of the season for the Wildcat runners.
Freshman Robert Cheseret showed off his stride for the first time in the 2003 season. Cheseret took the individual title after completing the 6.3-kilometer course in 19:12.36. Junior-transfer Jonah Maiyo and was the next Wildcat to cross the line. His effort to break up a pack of four Sun Devils fell short at the finish line. Maiyo was sixth across the line, finishing in 19:35.39.
Senior Matt McInvale clocked a time of 19:53.18 to claim seventh overall. Finishing 12th for the Wildcats was senior Eric Bohn, crossing the line at 20:21.97. Freshman Eric Chavez wasn't too far behind with his 13th-place finish and a time of 20:26.56.
The UA women were led by junior Beth Hoge. Hoge clocked a time of 16:05.23 on the 4.3-kilometer course to finish eighth overall. Sophomore Michi Hirakawa-Wong looked strong as she crossed the finish line in 11th place. She finished with a time of 16:12.22. Sophomore Amber Steen was the third Wildcat across the line, finishing 13th in 16:23.47.
Senior Nicole Gurnicz is another Wildcat looking really competitive in the early season. Gurnicz finished 14th overall with a time of 16:28.51. Sophomore Adrienne Goeller clocked a time of 16:37.68 to claim 16th overall.
The Wildcat women have a lot of depth in 2003 with five other athletes competing this week. Freshman Karen Langdorf finished 19th in 16:58.71. She was followed by sophomore Jenn Ford, who finished 20th in 17:01.02. Sophomore Robin Tierney was 21st overall with a time of 17:14.64. Fellow sophomore Susan Mortensen and freshman Ashley Ippolito closely followed Tierney. Mortensen was 22nd in 17:21.01, while Ippolito finished 23rd in 17:31.97.
The Wildcats will begin preparation for one of the biggest meets of the season. The Roy Griak Invitational will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Minneapolis, Minn. and will feature some of the country's strongest teams.
