Wildcat Women Receive First Ranking of the New Season

Sept. 24, 2003

Tucson, Ariz. (Sept. 24) -- The University of Arizona women's basketball team is preseason ranked No. 23 in the nation, according to the Athlon Sports College Basketball preseason magazine released this week. The Wildcats joined No. 4 Stanford as the only two Pac-10 teams ranked among the top 25.

The magazine also named Wildcat sophomore center Shawntinice Polk a second team preseason All-American. Polk and Stanford star Nicole Powell, a first team selection, were the only Pac-10 players named to the Athlon Preseason All-America list.

This marks Polk's third such preseason honor. She was also named to the first-ever Wooden Women's Award Preseason All-America Team and was chosen a preseason candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy Award.
