Arizona, Coach Lopez Agree On Five-Year Contract Extension

Sept. 26, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona Board of Regents gave its approval today of the University of Arizona's five-year extension to head baseball coach Andy Lopez's contract. The deal will extend the Wildcat skipper's contract through the 2008 baseball season.

'I've stated numerous times to numerous people in the media, here in town and on the recruiting trail that the University of Arizona and Tucson is where I and, more importantly, my family want to be,' Lopez said. 'The extension to my contact will certainly help me and my coaching staff continue the work we have done in our first two seasons here on the field, in recruiting and in the classroom. I have made a commitment to the university and now they have made one in me.'

Terms of the extension were not disclosed, but the Board of Regents gave its approval on Friday during its monthly meeting in Tempe.

'We're pleased to get this done,' Arizona director of athletics Jim Livengood said. 'I believe Andy Lopez is the top baseball coach in the country and we're very happy that this extension will allow him and his family to be a part of the proud Arizona baseball tradition for years to come.'
